The DIY kick-starter still requires plans to be drawn up and submitted, just so building control can make the relevant site inspections to your project.
A DIY kick-starter package generally takes 2 weeks, and then to finish it depends on how eager you are or how bullied you are into finishing it! Be under no illusions - if it would take a professional loft conversion team a further 1-2 weeks to finish it and that’s full time everyday. You should expect it to take you a good 3-5months, as you may not have the luxury of working on it everyday all day!
